Tent Size Calculator

A seated dinner at round tables needs 12 to 15 square feet per guest, long banquet tables need 10 to 12, and a standing reception needs about 8. Add a dance floor at 3 square feet for 40 percent of your guest list. For 100 guests at rounds that is 1,200 to 1,500 square feet, which a 40 x 40 tent covers.

Square feet per guest, by seating style

These are published industry densities, shown as ranges because that is how the sources give them. Averaging a range into one number invents a precision nobody has.

Frequently asked questions

What size tent do I need for 50 guests?
For a seated dinner at round tables, 600 to 750 square feet, which a 20 x 40 tent covers. Long banquet tables bring that down to 500 to 600. A standing reception needs about 400. Add 60 square feet if you want a dance floor.
How many people fit in a 20x20 tent?
A 20 x 20 tent is 400 square feet. That seats roughly 26 to 33 guests at round tables, 33 to 40 at long banquet tables, or about 50 standing. Those figures assume no dance floor, buffet or bar inside the same tent.
How many tables fit under a 20x20 tent?
Four to five tables of 8 at 5 foot rounds, once you allow chair push back room and a walking aisle. Long 8 foot banquet tables pack tighter and fit roughly 30 to 40 percent more seats in the same footprint, which is the move when a layout almost fits.
How much tent space does a dance floor take?
Size the floor first: 40 percent of the guest list at 3 square feet each, so 120 square feet for 100 guests, laid as a 12 x 12 floor. This calculator adds that floor to the seating space under the tent. The dance floor size calculator works out the floor itself, panel by panel.
Does a bounce house go in the tent?
Usually not. Inflatables need their own clearance on all sides and enough overhead height, and they anchor to the ground, which a tent floor plan does not leave room for. Site the inflatable beside the tent on its own footprint and check the manufacturer's clearance.
What size tent do I need for 100 guests?
For a seated dinner at round tables, 1,200 to 1,500 square feet, which a 40 x 40 tent covers. Long banquet tables need 1,000 to 1,200, a 20 x 60, and a standing reception about 800, a 20 x 40. With a dance floor, round tables need 1,320 to 1,620 square feet, a 30 x 60.
What size tent do I need for 150 guests?
For a seated dinner at round tables, 1,800 to 2,250 square feet, which a 40 x 60 tent covers. Long banquet tables need 1,500 to 1,800, a 30 x 60, and a standing reception about 1,200, a 20 x 60. Add a dance floor and round tables need up to 2,430 square feet, a 40 x 80.
