The four kinds of commercial dunk tank

A commercial dunk tank is a water tank with a hinged seat over it, released when a thrown ball hits a target. They come towable on their own trailer, on a dolly, collapsible with a vinyl liner, or inflatable. The difference that matters to a rental company is how each one gets to the party.

Trailer mounted. Twister Display's Easy Dunker is a 500 gallon polyethylene tank built onto its own trailer, with a vinyl coated steel cage, a light kit and a removable hitch tongue. Its maker says it "sets up in two minutes without any tools". The trailer and tank are one unit, so it needs a tow vehicle and a parking spot, but no lifting.

Dolly mounted. The EconoDunker is the same polyethylene tank on a "heavy-duty dolly" instead of a trailer, for operators who move it in a box truck or keep it at one venue.

Collapsible. The Mr Dunk Tank, made in Menifee, California, is a powder coated steel frame with a 500 gallon heat welded vinyl liner. It weighs 360 pounds with all its pieces, folds to 5 by 4 by 2 feet, and its maker says it rides in a pickup bed and sets up in 10 to 20 minutes by one person. Twister's SpaceSaver Dunker uses the same idea with a 450 gallon liner and a ten minute setup.

Inflatable. Bouncing Angels, an inflatable maker in Rancho Cucamonga, California, builds a collapsible dunk tank in 16 to 18 ounce vinyl around a steel cage, "built to ASTM F2374", with a blower and a three year warranty. It quotes each build rather than listing a price.

A fifth option is not a dunk tank at all. Twister's Big Splash is a reverse dunk tank: the rider sits under a bucket that tips on a hit, and it runs off a garden hose. It suits indoor events and sites where 500 gallons is impossible. If you are still choosing between this and other attractions, party rental business ideas compares them, and how to start a party rental business covers the business around them.

We found no maker publishing a steel or fiberglass tank for sale with a price. The commercial tanks we could read were polyethylene, or a steel frame with a vinyl liner.

What a dunk tank costs to buy

A new commercial dunk tank cost $3,895 to $5,295 on the makers' pages we read on 16 October 2026, before freight. The spread comes from the trailer and the window, not from the tank.

Prices read on each maker's page on 16 October 2026. Twister Display is in East Liverpool, Ohio, and calls itself the "World's leading supplier of dunk tanks for over 35 years".

What to check before you pay:

  • What the warranty excludes. Mr Dunk Tank gives no warranty on water liners "unless they are extremely leaking water on day one", expects a liner to last 2 to 5 years, and recommends a spare. Price a spare liner into a collapsible tank.
  • Freight. Mr Dunk Tank charges a flat $900 to ship in the continental US, or free pickup in Menifee. Twister ships the Easy Dunker on a pallet.
  • The window. It costs extra and it sells: spectators see the dunk. Twister's maintenance sheet says replace it only with impact resistant polycarbonate, because "anything else will burst on impact".
  • Used tanks. We found no maker selling used tanks with published prices. Twister runs a trade in window each October for an old tank from any maker, against a new one. A used tank is a seat mechanism you did not watch being maintained, so inspect the hinges, spring and latch as the section on the seat describes.

Payback. Mr Dunk Tank says its tank pays back in 10 to 20 events at $200 to $400 each. On our arithmetic from the rental prices below, a $4,395 EconoDunker at $325 a rental needs about 14 rentals before freight, insurance and labor.

Which dunk tank to buy for a rental fleet

Buy the tank that fits how you deliver, not the cheapest one. Every model above holds about the same water and dunks the same way; what differs is the trip to the party and the setup at it.

If youBuyWhyPrice, 16 October 2026
Tow to most parties and want the fastest setupTrailer mounted, such as the Easy DunkerOne unit, no lifting, a two minute setup by its maker's account$4,895 to $5,295
Move it in a box truck, or keep it at one venueDolly mounted, such as the EconoDunkerThe cheapest hard tank, with no trailer to tow or store$3,895 to $4,395
Deliver in a pickup to backyards a trailer cannot reachCollapsible, such as Mr Dunk Tank or the SpaceSaver360 pounds in pieces that fit a pickup bed; one person sets it up$3,995 to $4,495
Already run inflatables and want it on the same blower and crewInflatable, such as Bouncing AngelsBuilt to ASTM F2374 like the rest of the fleetQuoted per build
Book indoor or cold weather eventsA reverse dunk tank, such as the Big SplashA garden hose instead of 500 gallons$1,795

Three questions settle it:

  • Can your truck tow it? A trailer tank weighs over 4,500 pounds once filled, but it travels empty; check the trailer weight against your hitch rating before you buy.
  • Can the delivery reach the yard? Jolly Bouncers in Simi Valley, California, tells renters its trailer tank needs 5 feet of clearance to reach the setup spot. Narrow side gates favor a collapsible tank.
  • Who sets it up? A collapsible tank adds 10 to 20 minutes of assembly to every delivery, and a spare liner to the budget, since liners last 2 to 5 years.

For a first tank, the market decides it: if most of your bookings are schools and fairs on open fields, the trailer tank earns its premium in setup time; if they are backyard parties, the collapsible one reaches more of them.

How much water a dunk tank holds

A standard dunk tank holds about 500 gallons, and larger models up to 750 gallons, per The Dunk Tank Company in Michigan. At 8.3 pounds a gallon, 500 gallons of water weighs about 4,165 pounds before the tank. That weight decides where a tank can stand.

Three planning consequences:

  • Never on a stage or deck. Twister's safety sheet says "Never place the dunk tank on a platform or stage", for exactly this weight. Level ground only, and Carnival Guy asks for a level, flat surface on grass or pavement.
  • Arrive early. An hour of filling sits before the party starts. Carnival Guy's crew arrives "at least one hour before your party start time".
  • Hydrants need permission. The Dunk Tank Company says a hydrant fills a tank "in minutes" but needs "prior approval from your local fire department or city services". It also sells a water delivery service for sites with no usable spigot.

Every operator we read makes the customer supply the water. House of Bounce in New York and Bounce Houses R Us in Illinois both say so on the product page, and Backyard Inflatables rents a hose for $10.

Towing a trailer dunk tank

A trailer dunk tank is towed empty and drained, always. Full, it weighs more than two tons and the tank is not designed to move that way. The towing rules that matter come from the maker's instructions; state trailer law is yours to check.

From Twister Display's Easy Dunker setup and maintenance sheets:

  1. Trailer and tank are one unit. "Do not try to separate."
  2. The hitch tongue comes off for setup. Two pins hold it; you remove it, tilt the tank upright and set it on its base.
  3. Chain everything for the road. Use "all safety chains", both on the tow bar and around the canvas arms, and lock the seat in its up position.
  4. Test the lights every time. "Be sure to test the turn signals and brake lights before towing", and check the light wiring for cuts or crimps.
  5. Check both tongue pins and the safety chain before each trip.

Twister sells an "MSO Service" option on the Easy Dunker. An MSO, a manufacturer's statement of origin, is the document motor vehicle agencies commonly use to title a new trailer. Whether your state requires a title, registration or plates for this trailer is a question for its motor vehicle agency; we did not verify state rules, and Twister's product page does not publish the trailer's empty weight. Ask the maker for the trailer's weight rating before you quote a tow vehicle.

Plan the stop like any heavy delivery. A dunk tank takes a crew member for the fill and the drain, which is why Saturday routing and crews puts water items early in the run and leaves room for the pickup.

The seat, the trigger and the window

The seat mechanism is what you are really selling, and it is the part that fails. Twister's instructions make the operator test it, teach it and inspect it every time.

Before the first rider. Push down on the front of the seat with one hand and hit the target with the other, to confirm "the seat is properly locked and is released when the target is pressed". Show the person on the seat how to reset the seat and trigger after each dunk.

The safety latch. The Easy Dunker has a seat safety latch behind the seat. Twister's rule is that each time the rider climbs back on, they first check "the seat is securely locked in place and that the safety latch is engaged", and release the latch only when ready.

Regular maintenance, from Twister's maintenance sheet:

  • Check the tank and frame for sharp edges.
  • Check the seat hinges, bolts and seat spring, and replace any that show wear.
  • Never clean the window with Windex or any ammonia product; use mild dish soap and water.
  • Replace a window only with impact resistant polycarbonate, never Plexiglass.

The SpaceSaver uses what Twister calls a "time-tested, 'sure release' trigger mechanism". Mr Dunk Tank uses a solid wood plank seat. Whatever the design, log each inspection against the tank so you can show it when a parent asks, or a claim does.

Rider rules from the manufacturers

Manufacturers set the rider rules, and they agree on the big ones: one rider, 250 pounds maximum, swimmers only, an adult operator present. They disagree on minimum height, so use the stricter rule of the tank you own.

Read 16 October 2026.

Twister's safety sheet adds rules worth printing on your agreement: rubber soled shoes for the rider, hands on knees and sitting forward when dunked, no holding the handles during the drop, coming up toward the front of the tank to avoid the seat, no standing or kneeling on the seat, no hitting the target by hand, keeping the tank away from electricity, and no operation in a storm. Anyone with a heart condition, pregnancy or back injury stays off. Twister also provides a dunk tank waiver for the rider to sign; how that fits your own agreement is covered in your rental agreement and damage waiver.

One conflict to fix in your own rules. Thumbtack's price guide says most rental companies hand out "2-3 ordinary softballs". Twister says never use hard balls and only the ones that came with the tank. Follow the maker.

Hot days and cold water

A dunk tank is a summer item, and the schedule decides how long volunteers stay on the seat. Book hot climates for the morning or early evening, and keep cold weather riders warm or keep the tank in the yard.

Arizona Bounce Around, in Phoenix, says "Arizona afternoons are brutal", that volunteers in direct sun "won't stay seated long", and that water does not stay cool in full sun. It recommends morning or early evening slots. Its price ladder of $279 for four hours up to $669 for eight rewards short bookings, which suits a morning slot.

Cold water is the other end. The Dunk Tank Company in Michigan rents a heated tank, the Big Bucket Dunk Tank, at $225, and recommends filling with a mix of warm and cold water where possible. It does not heat water filled from a hydrant. For a school's fall festival, a heated tank or Twister's hose fed Big Splash may be the only version a teacher will sit in.

The other weather rule is not about comfort: Twister says do not operate during a storm. Put the lightning rule from bounce house safety in the same paragraph of your agreement.

Draining 500 gallons

Draining is the part of a dunk tank rental most operators never write down. Five hundred gallons has to go somewhere when the party ends, and many cities forbid the street, the gutter and the storm drain.

When to drain. Twister Display says "as soon as you are finished using the dunker, open the drain and let the tank empty", and "NEVER LEAVE A DUNK TANK FILLED WITH WATER UNATTENDED". A filled tank left overnight in a yard is a drowning risk and a liability. Drain before you leave.

Where it can go. Rules are local, and the closest published model is the one for pool water. Mesa, Arizona, says you "should not drain pool water into streets, catch basins, curbs, gutters, ditches, channels, storm drains, and retention basins" under Mesa City Code 8-6-3(P). It allows draining to a lawn or landscape that lets water soak in, or to the home's sewer cleanout at no more than 12 gallons per minute. Arizona Bounce Around tells its customers to "plan drain path" and confirm with the venue before opening the valve, because "grass handles a release far better than concrete".

What to put in your process:

  • Ask at booking where the water will go, and write it on the order.
  • Choose the valve drain when you buy a Twister tank, so you control the flow rather than pulling a plug.
  • Point the drain at lawn, away from the house, the neighbor and the street.
  • On a school or park site, ask the facilities manager. Wichita Falls ISD in Texas makes vendors mark sprinkler systems and underground utilities, and a wet field matters to them.

Rules differ by city and are not uniform across the US or Canada, so read your own city's page before your first season.

Schools, fundraisers and insurance

Schools, churches and fundraisers are the dunk tank's best customers: the principal in the seat sells throws. They also bring paperwork, and at least one major event insurer leaves water activities out of its short term cover.

What a school asks for. Wichita Falls ISD, in Texas, publishes its rules for bounce houses and dunk tanks. Vendors submit a certificate of insurance and, for amusement rides including inflatables, a Texas Department of Insurance annual inspection certificate. Staff who sit in a dunk tank complete a "Workers' Compensation Exclusion Notification for Non Work Related Activities", and participants sign the district's waiver. Expect a similar packet from any district, and have your certificate ready.

What a host's event insurance may not cover. K&K Insurance's short term special event program, read on 16 October 2026, lists "In or on water activities" among the events it does not cover. Whether a dunk tank counts is K&K's call, but a church buying one day of cover may find the dunk tank is the reason it cannot, and ask to be named as additional insured on yours instead. How certificates and additional insured endorsements work is in bounce house insurance.

Your own policy. That guide notes that water units rate higher than dry inflatables. We found no published rule rating a dunk tank specifically, so ask your broker in writing whether the policy names dunk tanks, whether participant liability covers the person on the seat, and whether inland marine covers the trailer tank on the road.

In Canada, the tanks above are sold in US dollars from US makers, so add exchange and freight. Some provinces regulate amusement devices through a safety authority, such as TSSA in Ontario and Technical Safety BC; ask yours whether a dunk tank falls under its rules, as covered in licenses, permits and inspections.

What operators charge for a dunk tank

Published dunk tank rental prices ran $225 to $450 for a day or less on the operator pages we read, and Thumbtack puts the US average at $534, from $354 to $806. Most charge one flat price with delivery and setup included, and make the customer supply water and an attendant.

Read 16 October 2026. Mr Dunk Tank, a seller, says a rental "typically books for $200 to $400".

How to set yours:

  • Price the job, not the throws. The fill, the drain and the trip are most of the cost, and they do not shrink with a shorter party, which is why most operators above charge one day price. Arizona Bounce Around prices by length instead, with four hours at 42 percent of its eight hour price, which suits the short morning slots it recommends.
  • Schools get a quote, not the birthday price, because the paperwork, the attendant question and the field all differ. A school that pays by purchase order wants an invoice, not a checkout link: the free party rental invoice template makes one as a PDF.
  • Say who supplies the attendant. House of Bounce and United Inflatable Rides require one on the customer's side. If you staff it, charge for it.
  • Sell a backup. The Big Splash or a foam machine, from the foam party machine guide, is a second water item for customers who cannot take 500 gallons. On a hot day, commercial water slides compete for the same spigot, so check the site before you book both.

A dunk tank is one unit of stock. In party rental software built for rental companies, the tank is an item with the number you own, so the calendar stops offering it once it is booked, and a cleaning time after each pickup holds it back while it drains and dries. An attendant is a service item with no stock, and marking the tank as needing water shows the customer that a hose must be ready before your crew arrives.

Rentopus is booking, delivery and payment software for party rental companies. Your availability, your booking website and your signed agreements in one place, so two customers are never promised the same unit on the same Saturday. See how it works · Browse the guides

Frequently asked questions

How much does a dunk tank cost to buy?

New commercial dunk tanks listed at $3,895 to $5,295 on makers' pages on 16 October 2026. Twister Display's EconoDunker costs $3,895 to $4,395, its trailer mounted Easy Dunker $4,895 to $5,295, and Mr Dunk Tank's collapsible model $3,995 plus $900 freight. A reverse dunk tank, Twister's Big Splash, costs $1,795.

How much water does a dunk tank hold?

Most commercial dunk tanks hold about 500 gallons, and larger models up to 750, per The Dunk Tank Company. Twister Display's Easy Dunker and EconoDunker hold 500 gallons and its SpaceSaver 450. Five hundred gallons of water weighs about 4,165 pounds, and Twister says a filled Easy Dunker weighs over 4,500 pounds, so it must sit on level ground.

How long does it take to fill a 500 gallon dunk tank?

About 45 minutes to 1.5 hours from a garden hose, per The Dunk Tank Company and Thumbtack. Operators quote 45 minutes to an hour with good water pressure. A fire hydrant fills a tank in minutes, but The Dunk Tank Company says it needs prior approval from the local fire department or city services. Arrive at least an hour before the party.

Do dunk tanks make money?

They can. Operators published rental prices of $225 to $450 a day on the pages we read, and Thumbtack puts the US average at $534. On our arithmetic, a $4,395 tank renting at $325 pays back in about 14 rentals before freight, insurance and labor. Schools, churches and fundraisers book them for the same event year after year.

How much should you charge to rent a dunk tank?

Between about $225 and $450 a day, going by the operators we read in October 2026, with delivery and setup included and the customer supplying water and an attendant. Thumbtack puts the US average at $534. Charge one day price rather than by the hour, since the fill, drain and trip cost the same for a short party, and quote schools separately.

Which dunk tank is best for a rental business?

The one that fits your deliveries. A trailer mounted tank, such as Twister Display's Easy Dunker at $4,895 to $5,295, sets up fastest for schools and fairs on open fields. A collapsible tank, such as Mr Dunk Tank at $3,995, rides in a pickup and reaches backyards that a trailer cannot get into.

What are the rules for sitting in a dunk tank?

Twister Display keeps off anyone over 250 pounds, under 5 feet tall, or unable to swim, allows one person at a time, and requires an adult operator whenever the tank is in use. Mr Dunk Tank sets 4 feet as its minimum height. Riders wear rubber soled shoes, keep hands on knees, and check the seat latch each time they climb back on.

Where do you drain a dunk tank?

Onto lawn or landscape that lets the water soak in, never into the street or a storm drain. Mesa, Arizona, bans draining pool water into streets, gutters and storm drains and allows a home's sewer cleanout at up to 12 gallons a minute. Rules are local, so ask the venue, and drain before you leave: Twister says never leave a filled tank unattended.

Is there a used dunk tank for sale?

We found no maker publishing used dunk tanks with prices. Operators sell off fleets locally, and Twister Display runs a trade in window each October for an old tank from any maker. Inspect a used tank's seat hinges, spring, safety latch, trailer lights and window, and ask for a replacement liner on a collapsible model, since liners last 2 to 5 years.

What is an alternative to a dunk tank?

A reverse dunk tank, such as Twister Display's $1,795 Big Splash, drops a bucket of water on the rider and runs off a garden hose instead of 500 gallons. It suits indoor events, cold days and sites where a full tank cannot stand. A foam machine is another water attraction that needs a hose and an outlet rather than a filled tank.
